INAUGURAL SANNAM BIENNIAL CONFERENCE

16-18 NOVEMBER, 2011, GABORONE BOTSWANA

THEME:

Engaging Communities for Accelerating the Achievement of the Millennium Development Goals in the SADC Region.

The first SANNAM conference was a great success. Over 160 people attended from the SADC region and beyond. Apart from 46 concurrent sessions and several poster presentations, the conference offered three plenary sessions, a symposium, a debate, four workshops and a panel discussion.

Realizing that many of the countries in the region are struggling to achieve the MDG’s, and to enable health workers to contribute to the realization of the attainment of the MDG’s, nurses from the 15 SADC countries made several recommendations. Some of these include:

  • Establish MDG committees in every National Nurses Organization (NNO) to develop strategies to address challenges posed by the MDG’s.
  • Increase nursing education in terms of numbers and quality to address the appalling shortage of nursing personnel in the region and hence decrease the high patient nurse ratio.
  • Improve working conditions of nurses by deploying nurses according to their specialties and improving the remuneration of health workers.
  • Address the profound shortage of clinical equipment and medical supplies in all health facilities.
  • Provide safe water and sanitation and improve access to health services.
  • Advocate for responsive services that are relevant for the needs of the communities served.
    • Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
    • Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education.
    • Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women.
    • Goal 4: Reduce child mortality.
    • Goal 5: Improve maternal health.
    • Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases.
    • Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability.
    • Goal 8: Develop a Global Partnership for Development

‘PROUD TO BE A NURSE’ IMAGE CAMPAIGN’

Gaborone, 29 September 2010: The Nurses Association of Botswana (NAB) celebrated the 2010 International Year of the Nurse by launching the ‘Proud to be a Nurse’ Image Campaign, in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health. The aim of the campaign is to improve the image, reputation and motivation of nurses and midwives providing health services in Botswana. The campaign intends to achieve the following:

  • Develop and disseminate information about how to create a positive image of nursing.
  • Motivate nurses to take pride in service provision.
  • Encourage respect for the nursing profession from the public and the nurses themselves.
  • Nurse Ambassadors supported by the Ministry of Health visited nurses and met with the public to promote and implement the campaign.

The campaign was officially launched at the Annual General Meeting of the Nurses Association of Botswana on the 13th of October in Serowe by the Chief Nursing Officer in the Ministry of Health.
